Symbinar 2.0 Series - Mr. Joseph Raviraj

As part of the second edition of the live webinar series “SYMBINAR 2.0”, which focuses on the ideas of Reset, Resilience, and Resurgence we hosted Mr. Joseph Raviraj, Director - Labour and Employee Relations, Volvo Group India Pvt. Ltd. who expressed his views on one of the key aspects of People Management in his own field of work, "HR in an Automobile Industry”.

This particular session was very insightful and thought-provoking as it discussed a very important topic on the Human Resources. He started off by discussing how HR Management is central to any organization, and how it’s about far more than just hiring and firing employees. In forward-thinking companies today, HR Management focuses on the life-cycle of an employee - recruitment, direction, and management of human assets, and making strategic plans for the future. 

He also discussed the basic principles of HR and the importance of what it carries in any organization. He then spoke of the origins and the journey of HR from a ‘Welfare Officer’ from the 18th century to what we call and refer to as ‘Strategic Human Resource Management’ and ‘Human Capital Management’ in the modern-day. He explained how Volvo’s ‘Service Delivery Model’ was different from other automobile companies in the world. 

During the question and answer session, he addressed the issues of how the pandemic impacted businesses overall, especially how it affected Volvo. He mentioned why they didn’t fire the employee or decrease the wages so far which is a rare occurrence in these times.
